A sportot és a szebbik nemet egyaránt kedvelő kiváló tanár. Humanista, de kötődött a politikához. Ő Szent-Györgyi Albert, az egyetlen magyar, aki szülőföldjén élt és szegedi professzorként dolgozott, mikor elnyerte a Nobel-díjat.Szent-Györgyi előbb Szegedre vitte a Nobel-díj érmét, majd a világháború kezdetén a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum megvásárolta tőle; a plakett a mai napig ott látható (Szent-Györgyi a múzeumtól kapott összeget az akkoriban kitört Téli háború finnországi szenvedőinek ajánlotta fel).
Hatékonyan közreműködött a magyar Szent Korona és a koronázási jelképek hazakerülésében.
